Full Highlight Aftercare: What to Do in the First 2 Weeks

One of the biggest reasons people love their outcome here is that I’m careful and professional, especially when it’s someone’s first time lightening, and that same care continues after you leave. The most important rule after a Full Highlight is simple: wait 24 to 48 hours before your first wash so your toner and color settle. In Corona’s heat, that one step protects your brightness more than any fancy product.
0 to 48 hours after highlights hair: the do’s that matter most
A Full Highlight is a full-head foil service, so your hair has been through a lot in one sitting. I apply foils throughout the entire head for consistent dimension from the nape to the front hairline, and the aftercare is what keeps that multi-tonal look shiny instead of dull.
Quick rule: No washing for 24 to 48 hours, keep heat low, and avoid anything that makes you sweat heavily for about 48 hours.
Washing, heat, and sweat in the first two days
- Hold off on shampoo for 24 to 48 hours. If you need to refresh, use a dry shampoo lightly at the roots and brush through.
- Skip hot tools if you can. If you can’t, use heat protectant and keep the temperature moderate. High heat can fade toner fast.
- Avoid intense workouts for about 48 hours. Heavy sweating can make the scalp feel irritated and can shift toner sooner than you want.
Swimming and sun right away
I generally recommend keeping hair out of pools and the ocean for 48 to 72 hours. Chlorine, salt, and sun are a rough combo for fresh highlights. And if you’re running Downtown Corona errands after your appointment, throw your hair up or wear a hat if you’re walking in direct sun. It’s a small thing, but it helps.
Days 3 to 7: keep your brightness, don’t “undo” your toner
This is the week where people accidentally fade their highlights hair without realizing it. It’s usually not one big mistake. It’s a handful of little things that add up, especially with Corona’s hot, dry summers and the fall Santa Ana winds pulling moisture out of the hair.
What I want for you: bright, blended pieces that still look intentional when you style at home, not “flat blonde” or brassy bands.
Your wash routine for week one
- Use cool to lukewarm water. Hot water opens the cuticle and helps color slip out faster.
- Stick to sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo. If you’re searching “hair salon near me” because you’re tired of color fading, this is one of the biggest fixes.
- Don’t over-wash. If you can go longer between shampoos, your tone usually lasts longer too.
Avoid these for 2 to 3 weeks
- Clarifying shampoos. They strip out toner fast.
- High-heat styling every day. If you want hair styling near me because styling feels like a battle lately, I’d rather help you adjust the routine than watch your color get cooked out.
- Aggressive brushing on wet hair. Be gentle, especially around the hairline where highlights show most.
Week 2 highlights hair maintenance: tone, moisture, and smart color choices
By week two, your hair is telling the truth. If it feels a little dry, that’s normal after lightening, and it’s fixable. I’m big on keeping hair healthy while we go brighter. One of my favorite wins is helping someone transition from brown to blonde in steps so they get noticeable pieces without so much damage.
Deep conditioning that actually helps
Start a weekly deep-conditioning mask. Put it on mid-lengths and ends, let it sit, then rinse with cool water. This is especially important if you’re dealing with dry air or Santa Ana winds. Hydrated hair reflects light better, and that’s what makes highlights look expensive.
Brassiness, purple shampoo, and fun shades like pink highlights
Use a purple or toning product only if I’ve told you to, or if you’re clearly seeing warmth you don’t like. Overdoing purple shampoo can leave hair dull or slightly over-toned. If you’re playing with creative tones like purple highlights, blue highlights, or pink highlights, your best move is to keep your shampoo gentle and your water cooler. Fashion tones fade faster by nature, so protecting them is mostly about being consistent, not doing anything extreme.

The product basics I recommend after a Full Highlight (no guessing)
I keep product advice simple because busy schedules are real. You don’t need a shelf full of bottles. You need the right few.
- Sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo and a conditioner with good slip.
- Weekly deep-conditioning mask for moisture and softness.
- Heat protectant any time you blow dry or use an iron, even if it’s quick.
- UV protection spray or leave-in if you’re outdoors. Sun fades hair color, and Corona sun is no joke.
If you need help picking what works for your hair, tell me what you’re using now and how often you wash. I’ll point you in the right direction, especially if your hair is curly, thinning, or easily dry.
When to text me about your highlights, and when to plan toner (4 to 8 weeks)
If something feels off, don’t sit with it. I’d rather you reach out early than try a random fix at home. People stick with me for years because I pay attention to the details and I care about your hair health, not just how it looks leaving the chair.
What’s normal vs. what I want you to tell me
- Normal: a little dryness the first week or two. That’s why we focus on hydration.
- Tell me about it: unexpected patchy warmth, a tone you don’t love in certain lighting, or ends that suddenly feel rough even after conditioning.
For most people, a toner refresh or gloss is a 4 to 8 week conversation, depending on how often you wash, how much heat you use, and the tone you want to keep. A trim on that same schedule helps your highlights look cleaner on the ends.
Local note: I’m right here in Downtown Corona near 6th Street and Main Street, so it’s easy to pop in for a toner and then head to Main Street for dinner. And if you’re coming in from Norco, Eastvale, Jurupa Valley, Riverside, Temescal Valley, or Home Gardens, follow-ups stay simple.
If you found me searching “salon near me” or “hair salon near me” and you’re trying to keep your Full Highlight looking fresh, start with the first 48-hour rules and send me a message if you’re unsure about a product, swimming, or timing your next visit.
